“The Story of Sand” An Unusual Set of Cigarette Cards.
One of the most interesting facets of collecting cigarette cards is the diverse subject matter of the sets. Of course we have many very traditional themes; trains, planes famous characters etc. However, the ones that fascinate me are the ones that after reading the title of the set I still have no real idea of what the full subject matter of a full set would be. I like to imagine the person in charge of new themes at the time sitting there and the thought process that led them to each unusual group of cards. One such set that I happened across just very recently is a fine example. “The Story of Sand” a set of 50 cards by Ogden’s Ltd. The set was released in 1935, and I was not aware that this set existed. This is another aspect of the hobby of collecting these things. No matter how long I have been looking at and collecting cards, there is always a surprise waiting.
Some of my favorites in this set include the glass cards. While I was already aware of the crucial role sand plays in glass manufacturing and its significance as an invention, this set stands out for a unique reason. It’s the first time I’ve encountered two separate cards dedicated to the same subject, except in sets focused on a single topic. Having a large set with different parts of a story and two cards on one subject is quite unusual.
Among the collection, two cards stand out as particular favorites: those dedicated to the mesmerizing patterns in the sand. These cards delve into a captivating theme—patterns—each uniquely crafted by the forces of nature. One card showcases the intricate designs sculpted by the gentle caress of water, while the other reveals the stunning formations etched by the relentless breath of the wind.
At first glance, these cards might appear to be mere representations of nature’s artistry, simple yet beautiful. However, the true magic unfolds when you turn them over and delve into the stories on their backs. Here, you uncover a treasure trove of fascinating facts that transform these natural wonders into practical tools. You learn how to read these patterns to determine the direction of tides and wind, a skill that has been used by sailors and adventurers for centuries.
The water-patterned card might depict the delicate ripples left behind by retreating waves, each line telling a story of the ocean’s ebb and flow. The wind-patterned card, on the other hand, could illustrate the sweeping curves and ridges formed by gusts of air, capturing the dynamic dance between sand and wind. These patterns are not just visually striking; they are also rich with information, waiting to be deciphered.
Clearly, a very creative mind conceived this set, blending art and science in a way that is both educational and enchanting. These cards invite you to look closer, to see beyond the surface, and to appreciate the hidden stories written in the sands of time.
The card titled “Dangerous Sands” was an unexpected delight, primarily because it features a region of the world where I once lived. This personal connection instantly drew me in, but what truly captivated me was the story it tells. The tale of King John’s Treasure is one I know well, and seeing it depicted on this card brought back a flood of memories.
Imagine a time long ago, when King John of England, in a desperate bid to escape his enemies, lost his crown jewels in the treacherous sands of The Wash, a large estuary on the east coast of England. The card beautifully captures the perilous nature of these sands, which have swallowed countless treasures and secrets over the centuries. The illustration is both haunting and mesmerizing, evoking the mystery and danger that have always surrounded this legendary tale.
As you read the back of the card, you are transported into the heart of the story, learning about the shifting sands and the historical significance of the lost treasure. The narrative is so vivid that you can almost hear the clinking of the jewels and feel the tension of the moment. It’s a fascinating blend of history and personal nostalgia, making “Dangerous Sands” a standout in the collection.
Two more clever ideas are “Footprints on the Sands of Time” and “Sand as a Shock Absorber.” These concepts are both intriguing and unexpected. The first idea, “Footprints on the Sands of Time,” likely explores the ephemeral nature of our actions and their lasting impact, symbolized by footprints that are eventually washed away by the tide. The second idea, “Sand as a Shock Absorber,” delves into the practical and scientific aspects of how sand can cushion impacts, providing a natural form of protection. I would never have thought to include these themes, but they come with very interesting descriptions that add depth and insight to the collection.
In conclusion, Ogden’s “The Story of Sand” cigarette card set is a captivating blend of art, history, and science. Each card offers a unique glimpse into the fascinating world of sand, from the intricate patterns created by natural forces to the legendary tales of lost treasures. This collection not only showcases the beauty of nature but also educates and inspires, revealing the hidden stories written in the sands of time. Whether you’re a collector, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the wonders of the natural world, this enchanting set is sure to leave a lasting impression.
